A classic board game with deep roots in Canadian history, ‘Crokinole’ dates back to the late 19th century. Almost 150 years later, it’s all set to be established as a new activity for guests at Potters. So what is it? We took some time to find out and give it a go.
Believed to have originated in Ontario, Canada, the earliest known board was made by a craftsman named Eckhardt Wettlaufer in 1876. Though it is often debated, it’s thought that crokinole was inspired by a variety of other flicking and disc-based games that were popular in Europe at the time, such as shuffleboard and carrom.
Crokinole is a lot of fun, and portable!What sets crokinole apart is its unique blend of strategy, dexterity, and social fun, making it a beloved pastime across generations. By the early 20th century, the game had become a staple in Canadian households, often played at family gatherings and community events.
In its simplest form, players flick small wooden discs across a circular board, aiming for the centre hole, which yields the highest points. The outer rings of the board carry lower point values, and you’re required to navigate additional obstacles, like pegs, to score. While players aim for high scores, they must also strategically knock their opponents’ discs out of contention.

“It’s perfect for casual gameplay, but it’s not long before you see some strategy from those who might be a little more competitive! The rounds are quick too, so there’s always an opportunity for a rematch!”
